An Introduction to Jobs in Casinos by john mce
Casino jobs require candidates with energy in abundance, an accommodating personality and an ability to work with some of society's less-desireables.
In a land casino you could find yourself on your feet for six to eight hours at a time, with shifts spanning through the night and into the morning. Customers will often treat casino staff with disrespect, but there are many reasons why a casino job is desirable to many applicants.
Employees can expect to enjoy a vibrant and exciting workplace, meeting a unique cross-section of society, and seeing individuals winning big money on the roulette wheel or card table. There is no special training required for an entry-level casino job, although a clean criminal record and proof of being over the legal gambling age will be essential.
Floor Jobs
In a casino, 'the floor' describes the entire gambling area. From slot machines to blackjack tables, roulette wheels to bar and restaurant facilities, jobs on the floor of a casino are great for people who enjoy interacting with other people. There is a variety of roles available, such as bartenders, dealers and security.
Because they represent the casino, floor staff are under a lot of scrutiny. You're unlikely to be considered for a job on the floor if you have tattoos or unconventional hair. If you can't compromise on your appearance then a floor job won't suit you. If you have a passion for customer service and bags of energy, you can expect to make over the minimum wage with tips.
Cashier Jobs
Are numbers your strength? Some accounting experience is preferential for cashier jobs in a casino, but a provable grasp of maths could be enough. As well as counting money, you can be creating invoices incolcing cash, chips, credit cards, coupons and vouchers. Organisational skills are essential for these jobs.
Managerial Jobs
One of the greatest things about casino jobs, is that employees have an opportunity and real possibility of rising through the ranks quickly despite a lack of qualifications or experience. Promotions are also easily obtained because casinos tend to have high turnover of staff. After one or two seasons in a casino you could find yourself being promoted to a managerial role based on sheer seniority.
Casino management can be stressful though, and it could involve dealing with unfortunate individuals who have gambled away their life savings. If you've dealt with angry customers in customer service positions in the past, then you can imagine how difficult some of these customers can be.
